The other day, I went running with my friend Rich, who (I happen to find out) spends some Saturdays hiking up potential trout streams with a few dozen other people, bagging and hauling out trash. And he really likes doing this. I’ve spent hours trying to figure it out. General relativity, quantum mechanics, Newton’s law of gravitation, but it seems the more I try to come up with a solution the further from reality I get. So, recently, I’ve given up. No calculations or theories, only enjoyment. Just tripped across this site. Someone up in Elkins did a great job putting together a set of driving tours (with maps, in printable .pdfs), organized around different themes. Scenic Byways and Backroads, Historic Towns, Civil War, Mountain Heritage, and “Special Forest Places.” Tricky Fish restaurant just opened. And we’ve been waiting a long time for this, ever since owner Keeley Steel (of Bluegrass Kitchen fame) promised us gourmet hot dogs, chicken wings, fish’n’chips, po’ boys and other down-home fare . . . take out . . . and an outdoor deck. It’s Ramp Season, folks. Dig your own, buy them from Crazy Harry’s in Elkins (anyone know any other locations?), or head to one of the Great Ramp Feeds occurring around the state (check this post, or our Calendar, to see a schedule). Did you know there are sixteen covered bridges in the Mountain State? Clint Eastwood & Meryl Streep, eat your heart out. What we want to know is, has anyone traversed all sixteen?
