This Sunday, August 10, hundreds of mountain bikers will participate in the Black Bear 40K Mountain Bike Race at Kanawha State Forest. Experts start the full 40K course at 11:00; All other classes of riders (Sport=30K, Beginner=20K) start at noon. Full course info is available here.

The fine folks at www.iplayoutside.com can give you a sense of the difficulty of this race:

This is arguably one of the hardest courses in the WVMBA Point series. In past years this course has been called the Scariest Mountain Bike Race in the World.

Check out their site for photos of past races. Even if you’re not a biker, this is definitely an entertaining race for spectators, as you can watch some of the best bikers in the world doing battle with West Virginia’s steep terrain.

Registration for racers starts at 8:30, and the cost is $25 for WVMBA members or $30 for non-members. Park at the pool area in KSF. First 100 racers get a free t-shirt.
