Mike Gordon - An original member of uber-jammers Phish, bassist Mike Gordon has explored a wide range of projects since the band dissolved in 2004. After working with Southern music guru Col. Bruce Hampton, Warren Haynes’ Gov’t Mule and 12-string legend Leo Kottke, his new release, “The Green Sparrow,” features an eclectic collection of songs ranging from free-form rock and calypso to pop and funk. The CD also features guests Ivan Neville, Chuck Leavell and Bill Kreutzmann, and former bandmates Trey Anastasio and Page McConnell. His touring band includes longtime collaborator Scott Murawski on guitar, percussionist Craig Myers, Tom Cleary on keyboards and drummer Todd Isler.
Vienna Teng - Within six months after she left her software engineering job to promote her new release, singer/songwriter Vienna Teng was appearing on the “The Late Show” with David Letterman. Not long after her TV debut, she was featured on NPR’s “Weekend Edition” and was the subject of a prime-time profile on CNN. Combining her classical background - she wrote her first song at age 6 and had composed an album’s worth of instrumentals by age 16 - and folk sensibilities within a contemporary pop framework, her label debut, produced by David Henry (R.E.M., Cowboy Junkies), offers a diverse collection of lush, melodic songs, utilizing everything from string quartets to slide guitars. Having toured with the likes of Joan Osborne, Shawn Colvin, and Patty Griffin, Teng next hooked up with producer Larry Klein (Joni Mitchell, Madeleine Peyroux) for 2006’s “Dreaming Through the Noise.”
Crooked Still - This Boston-based acoustic ensemble utilizes cello, banjo, bass and Aoife O’Donovan’s haunting vocal to redefine traditional American music and has been called “the most important folk group to emerge from Boston since the Jim Kweskin Jug Band in the early ’60s.” With a unique blend of American, Irish, Klezmer and jazz, Crooked Still “can warp a traditional American tune to the brink of unrecognizability without sacrificing the authenticity of the original sources.” Crooked Still members also moonlight with Tony Trischka’s Double Banjo Bluegrass Spectacular, Darol Anger’s Republic of Strings and jazz pianist McCoy Tyner. Now a quintet, the current lineup includes O’Donovan (vocals, guitar, baritone ukulele, piano, glockenspiel), Brittany Haas (fiddle), Dr. Gregory Liszt (banjo), Tristan Clarridge (cello, fiddle) and Corey DiMario (double bass, tenor guitar).
Carrie Rodriguez - After collaborating with veteran songwriter Chip “Wild Thing” Taylor on three critically acclaimed albums of duets, singer/violinist Carrie Rodriguez has struck out on her own. Attending both Oberlin College and Berklee School of Music, Rodriguez immersed herself in Boston’s bluegrass-jazz scene. In 2001, she was “discovered” by Taylor while playing at an Austin record shop. Her 2006 debut, “Seven Angels on a Bicycle,” featured guitarist Bill Frisell and tunes co-written by Taylor. Her current release is titled “She Ain’t Me.”
The Rescues - Made up of three critically acclaimed singer/songwriters - Adrianne, Kyler England and Gabriel Mann - The Rescues have been called “the first Indie Supergroup” and compared to The Eagles and Fleetwood Mac. The trio has played at Sundance, SXSW, CMJ, and England’s V Festival, and have taken top honors in the USA, John Lennon, Unisong, Mid-Atlantic, and International Songwriting Contests. Their songs have been featured on television shows and films including “Arrested Development,” “Studio 60,” “Men In Trees,” “The Hills,” “What About Brian,” “Real World” and “Superhero Movie.” Following the January release of their debut EP, The Rescues’ full length debut, “Crazy Ever After,” is set for release in September.
