The best way to get busy in Charleston, West Virginia

[RAFT] Gauley Season is Open!

By susan • Sep 17th, 2008 • Category: Get Outside

If you ever wanted to die being sucked under a West Virginia rapid, now is the time!

The dams are bustin’ open and that means it’s Gauley Season. Until October 19, you can experience Class V+ rapids (the scariest they let you ride) on the Upper Gauley River.

There are many rafting companies that offer tours.  The WV Tourism Dept. has some information, including a guide to planning your trip.

For the fainter of heart, the nearby New River offers more tame raft trips. Although I went on the New River when it was supposedly low, and I almost wet my board shorts. But then, I don’t generally participate in sports that require a helmet. Just saying.  I used West Virginia Adventures, and they were very accommodating of my anti-adrenaline while keeping it dangerous for the more adventurous in my party.  Everyone was happy!  Plus, they provided lunch.
