In this modern Ghost Story, four New England octogenarians — the self-styled “Chowder Society” (Fred Astaire, Melvyn Douglas, Douglas Fairbanks Jr. and John Houseman) — have harbored a terrible secret for half a century, but the lid on their Pandora’s box of subterfuge is about to blow. The ghost of a young woman (Alice Krige) haunts the men, each of whom played a part in her horrific death.

In The Thing, Kurt Russell leads a team of American scientists at a base in Antarctica. Their uneventful lives are disrupted by a group of Norwegians in a helicopter firing at a lone dog. When the chopper crashes, the dog moves in with the scientists. During the night, the canine metamorphoses and attacks other animals at the base and members of the team, who soon discover that an alien that can take any shape is in their midst. Directed by John Carpenter!

The Charleston Ballet Presents: Ballroom, Barres, and Ballet Blues

Friday, October 24, 8 p.m. and Saturday, October 25, 8 p.m. at the Charleston Civic Center Theater.

This will be a wonderful mixed bill performance of contemporary, ballet, and modern dance, faturing the full Charleston Ballet company as well as guest artists and choreographers!

Centered Pilates Studio opened August 1^st at 311 West Washington Street. Owner and lead instructor Amy Goins started her home-based business last year and is now expanding with studio for group and private classes.

Pilates is a great exercise for all ages and experience levels. Centered offers traditional mat pilates as well as apparatus training and fusion classes.

I attended her lunch time power Pilates class last week and absolutely loved it. Be warned, Amy knows her stuff! She’s strict but incredibly knowledgeable (is that a strange looking word or what?) about modern Pilates.

Supporting the Arts makes stronger communities! The Charleston Area Alliance will host Think Tank 17.3 on Friday, August 29th from 8:30-10:30 (yeah, it’s early, but it will be worth while), at the Alliance building at 1116 Smith Street.

This is an opportunity to learn how our area can impact the arts through development tools like artists coops, arts districts, artists relocation programs and more!

The guest presenter is Mr. Andrew Vick, executive director of the Allegany Arts Council in Cumberland, MD.

Free Sunday Matinees at the Clay Center!

Show starts at 2p.m.

This week features the Fred Astair and Ginger Rogers in the 1935 musical comedy “Top Hat.” This film was nominated for an Oscar and features music from Irving Berlin.

Make sure to check out the Clay Center’s current photography exhibit while you’re there, “The Best of Photography and Film from the George Eastman House Collection.”

That exhibit lasts through Sept. 14 and can be viewed at $7 for adults and $5.50 for children and seniors.

The East End is GOING GREEN!

Tuesday Aug. 5 at 7:05 p.m. East End Main Street is hosting the first annual E3 EcoDay at Appalachian Power Park.

The first 1,500 East End attendees will receive a free CFL light bulb to be placed at his or her residence to promote both energy saving and safety.

The WV Department of Energy, WV Department of Environmental Protection, and the WV Sustainable Communities Institute will be a part of the kick-off handing out free information and samples of “Green” household products and lots more!

Also, East End Main Street will have exclusive Eco East End T Shirts and cloth shopping bags available all night long.

Bring the family and kids out on August 5 to learn more about how you and everyone in the community can help move toward a more sustainable environment for generations to come.

The Fourth Annual East End Walk For Kids will take place on Saturday, August 23 at 10 a.m. beginning at the Appalachian Power Park.

Participants will walk a total of 24 blocks, and are asked to find sponsors on a per-block basis (i.e. $2 per block totals a $48 donation) or a flat fee for the entire walk. The registration fee for adult walkers is $5. Donations should be collected in advance and turned in at registration.

Be a part of a collaborative effort to work towards solutions! “Communities United Against Hate: Not in Our Town,” is a public forum being held at 6:00 p.m. on August 5 at the Charleston Marriott Town Center, 200 Lee Street East.

The forum is a first in a series of activities planned to bring all sectors of our community together to promote inclusion.

The featured speaker at the first event is Tom “TJ” Leyden, a former neo-Nazi activist and recruiter. Leyden experienced a profound change of heart and began teaching tolerance, and has been working for five years for the Simon Wiesenthal Center, teaching the origins of hate and how communities can fight against it. He has authored two books, Turning Away From Hate and Skinhead Confessions.

This important event is free and open to the public.
